Do I need to describe what Linux is? No, in the world of technology, everyone knows it.
The question is this...

Is Debian Linux a viable dev environment? The answer is YES. That you're reading this means you already have your own reasons for being interested in Linux, so I don't need to convince you that it's worth your consideration. However, you might not yet have heard about all the perks you'll be able to enjoy on Debian...

In the recent article at the Fossbytes website: "11 Best Linux Distros For Programming 2020" the #1 choice is Debian GNU/Linux. This distro is the mother operating system for many other Linux distributions. Debian is a distribution that emphasizes free software. It supports many hardware platforms. Debian and distributions based on it use the .deb package format and the dpkg package manager and its frontend (apt). In any discussion of the best Linux distros for programmers, Debian finds a special place. The reason behind Debian's status as a developer's operating system is a large number of packages, which are aimed at stability, and tons of tutorials out there to help solve your issues and get better at whatever you're doing. Here, I'd also like to mention the Debian "testing branch" (ie. rolling release), which has all the latest software and it's pretty stable. It's highly recommended for advanced programmers and system administrators.

Why use Debian for web design and development? If you want a rock-solid system whose vast repositories have tons of open source packages, go for Debian. Also, the dpkg/apt package manager is another major plus. An example of this: as root, type "apt install filezilla" in terminal, hit 'enter" and it's done.

My personal choice as primary HTML editor is Geany a small and lightweight Integrated Development Environment. It was developed to provide a small and fast IDE, which has only a few dependencies from other packages. Another goal was to be as independent from any particular Desktop Environment, like KDE or GNOME, thus only requiring the GTK2 runtime libraries.

My graphics editor is GIMP, beautifully functional, on par with Photoshop, but much lighter. More importantly, it's free of telemetry and invasive corporate spyware.

This site was hand-coded in Geany on Debian Testing, with all images edited in GIMP. I've also built a very simple Example Bootstrap Site for any who need an inexpensive website. We also host for a minimal yearly fee. If you need help, contact Rick.
